Violin and Viola Lessons
Teaching Philosophy
I teach a combination of the Suzuki method and traditional violin and viola. I am certified in Book One Suzuki Violin and I plan to continue taking Suzuki teacher training classes. I have studied with members of the Baltimore Symphony and a former member of the New York Philharmonic and former Karen Tuttle and William Primrose Students. I implement the skills that I've learned from my teachers in combination with the Suzuki method. I've struggled with many injuries so I like to incorporate injury prevention and Alexander Technique into my teaching. I always try to make the lesson as fun and engaging as possible. I know not every student wants to go into music professionally, but I want everyone to get the most out of music. I really love teaching; it truly brightens my day to hear students play music.

FAQ:
At what ages can one learn violin or viola?
I have experience teaching both kids and adults. I genuinely believe anyone can learn to play an instrument at any age.
What is the optimal lesson time?
I think it really depends on the student and their needs. If a student can only focus for 30 minutes we can still make a lot of progress. I personally prefer 45-60 minute lessons when possible so I can cover more material.
What materials will I need?
I recommend a music stand, metronome/tuner, rosin, pencil, and whatever music we decide to work from.
What if I am sick on the day of the lesson?
I don’t want to get sick so please let me know and we can move the lesson online.
How much should students practice?
Generally, I find that lessons are more enjoyable when the students practice throughout the week. Without practice, it can be difficult to move forward. I think the most important thing to think about for practice is efficiency, the amount of time is not as important. If you can find even five minutes a day to practice, you can get a lot done. Ideally, 15-30 minutes a day for beginners is ideal but I understand many students are very busy. I would rather a student do a small goal-driven practice session than a long aimless practice session. If one practices without much thought they may just reinforce bad habits. I explain how to practice effectively in lessons and I am happy to answer any questions.
How do I pay for lessons?
I accept Zelle, Venmo, or Cash Payments.
How often should I have lessons?
I recommend weekly lessons if possible. Please try to let me know as soon as possible if you will be out of town or busy on the day of your lessons. It can be difficult to get into a routine and make progress if lessons are infrequent. That being said please let me know if you are sick on your lesson day. We can move the lesson online.
